Today we were lucky enough to have Helen Harrison, the Mayor of Thornbury, helping us with our gardening. We spent our session planting new winter flowers in the pots to go along the side of the Junior playground and planting red and white onions, which will be ready in spring.
Next term, we are looking forward to welcoming our new Infant members to the club.
What a weekend! Last year’s Federation Farmers were delighted to be invited, along with Mrs Tulley and their parents to the Thornbury in Bloom presentation afternoon. The children gave a short presentation to a packed hall full of all the volunteers and prize winners from this summer’s judging. They recieved a particularly large round of applause when showing off the brilliant squashes they had grown.
We then found out that we had won a number of prizes from Thornbury in Bloom…

Well done Federation Farmers and thank you to everyone who has helped with our gardening.
Our first Federation Farmers session of the new school year! We are lucky to have some very enthusiastic new farmers on board. We spent this afternoon collecting seeds from the cosmos, nasturtiums and sunflowers on the allotment. We also planted some winter salads and broad beans and tried a spikey cucumber and two-legged carrot from the garden! To top it all off we were super excited to find a frog hiding amongst the leeks. Hopefully he has been keeping the slugs at bay over the holidays.
We didn’t manage to get many photos before the camera battery ran out today. Instead we were busy watering (the plants and each other!!) to make sure that all our new plants will keep growing. We tried fresh peas from Vicki Williams’ garden, which everyone enjoyed. We also talked about our end of term Federation Farmers’ Feast which will be in the last week of term. Our wonderful Thornbury in Bloom volunteers were also helping us again today, introducing us to some very exciting cucumber plants and helping us label up all the interesting things in the garden.
Wow! What an exciting afternoon! An army of helpers from Thornbury in Bloom joined us today to help spruce up the planters around our schools’ entrances. They also rebuilt the planter around our fruit beds and donated lots of lovely compost for our vegetable beds.
We also created a butterfly friendly flower bed, next to the Year 2 classrooms which we filled with lavender and buddleias.
We topped our awesome afternoon off with a taste of gooseberry jam and blackcurrant cordial, made from the fruit we picked last week. Thank you so much to Vicky for cooking them up for us. What a treat!
